Doctor Season 11
Dec. 19th, 2018 09:54 pm I just finish the last episode of the new Jodi Whittaker season of Doctor Who. As celebration of being back on dreamwidth, some thoughts.
First things first: I LOVE JODI WHITTAKER AS THE DOCTOR!!! Forever and always, oh my goodness.
Second things: I LOVE the tardis team WITH MY WHOLE HEART. YAZ!!!!!! I could use about 1,000,000 x more Yaz. Ryan - you are a delight. Graham, I have concerns about you prominence, but not about you specifically. The TARDIS is half POC and half women! It's just. So lovely.
Third things: IT'S SO PRETTY!!! my god, the settings, the light, the color in the doctor's outfits, the faces of the characters. That Norway episode! SO pretty.
Ok, now the critiques!
I feel....conflicted about Graham getting so much plot and emotional development, and I can't help but wonder if it's a "oh, here's an older white man, it's cool guys, we're still telling that story" even if subconsciously? I don't know. I like Graham, I get the emotional beats of his story, but wouldn't Ryan have strong feelings about his gran - if not stronger??
I enjoyed reading some of the AV Club reviews about showrunning vs episode writing, especially compared to the former two showrunners. Interesting stuff, and I'm not sure enough yet of how I feel. Except that I'm so deeply deeply grateful to be out of the Moffat era that I can't even say. And he conditioned me to expect insane pacing for season finales and two parters and more and more, and this twist and that one. Phew. So it was weird to have a finale that just calls back to the pilot and a little to the second episode. If there was other Senza stuff, I missed it. Did we know planets had gone missing??? It sounds familiar, but that was also season 4. ???
Wait, back to the good - Fourth things: OH YOU GUYS. THE SECOND EPISODE HAD A QUEER HEROINE.
Ok, my go-to-bed-alarm is blaring, I have no idea where the bunnies are, and I still (STILL) have work in the morning.
Sincere love and joy to you all!
